It’s sad to see how many young people, in the beginning of life are suffering from trauma after serving there. It’s like compressing our very worst and complete life into one single year of life and then living with the horrific images in your mind day in and day out afterwards. These young people who gave their lives, and literally gave their lives to the military effort and will continue giving their lives because for the rest of their lives they will have the images we wish they would never have had to see.

Too bad we can’t send the old drunk geezers out there who don’t care about their lives anyways and who are crazy as hell, and hell bent on showing how macho they are. Instead the unfortunate truth is that we send out our youngest most vital members of society to a horrific, depressing and sad world.

Coping with PTSD is difficult. It can take much time to dull memories that one doesn’t really want to deal with.

Researchers are finding out that in the experiments, a chemical virtually identical to the drug mianserin extended the lives of worms by 30 percent. “Lifespan can be extended by blocking certain types of retransmission implicated in food sensing in the adult animal,” Linda Buck, a researcher at the Howard Hughes Institute in Seattle, Washington, and two colleagues screened 88,000 chemicals to see which might enhance the lifespan. Turns out that a few of those used as anti-depressants actually did make a difference.

Three other compounds that also act on serotonin also had a similar effect: mirtazapine, methiothepin and cyproheptadine. Interesting to note that Antihistaminic side effects include drowsiness and weight gain.

The antidepressant mianserin also notably blocked uptake of another neurotransmitter, octopamine, which has a role in releasing fat from fat cells.

Now the dilemma, should we use the magnets or the drugs?

Well now the newest study comes out showing that TMS, Transcranial magnetic stimulation, is effective in decreasing depression in people who have been resistant to treatment from medication. Essentially this is the use of a magnet pulsating electrical impuleses to the brain, very similar it seems to electro shock therapy used in the 50’s and even to this day to shock the brain out of it’s senses. Well in TMS it appears that this is a gentler way of stimulating the brain into action. Now it’s time to go out to the health store and purchase one of those magnetetic pillows that have been floating around for a while touting off the health benefits that turn out to be true.

If you’ve ever been in an MRI machine, you might have had some type of Magnetic Pulsing, some clicking, some sounds, that are similar to the system of TMS. What is promising about this type of therapy is that it’s non invasive and it doesn’t require drugs.

The only thought that comes to my mind on this one is what kind of a brain jolt is this?

There are some products on the market, such as the SOTA Magnetic Pulser that might also do the trick. Who knows.

I’m thinking to give it a try along with one of the SAD lights to see if I really get any happier than I am already.

Another study adds to the growing evidence that the brain chemical dopamine is an important element of well being and low levels of it may add to obesity. Rats with less dopamine were fatter than rats that had the chemical. The new study does not explain whether or not the lack of dopamine is a cause of obesity or whether the obesity is a cause of low dopamine, but either way, stop eating and the dopamine in the brain will increase. You’ll have to get your reward system in some other way now.

An animal study shows the notion that drug cravings can be turned off by shutting down parts of the brain. This finding could mean that drugs trained to operate on the insular cortex of the brain, precisely, could stop the brain from feeling the pain associated with cravings and body disturbances due to withdrawl.

But what does the insular cortex do otherwise that is needed for human life? Well basically it handles human emotion, things like ability to feel sympathetic to others, sadness, happiness, etc. Suppose this will go back to lobotomies done in the 1950’s that turned people into Zombies, if refined this new discovery could lead to either medication or electrode implants which could attempt to stop these emotions from coming into the addiction play. In addition to helping addicts, it could help in weigh loss, where this particular region of the brain handles cravings.

This new information is important because we could have guessed that shutting down a brain would stop cravings, but the object is to shut down only particular areas of the brain.

Vote for bad republicans today goes to Republican Gov. Don Carcieri who implemented a very stupid plan to save Rhode Island some money without doing any homework. Smart (not) lawmakers have now advocated to save juvinille courts and family services money by ruling that many teens are to be tried as adults for things like drug laws. Many people know that teens are emotional hormonal beings that are likely to sew wild oats, and isn’t that what teen years are for? With pressure from peers, and just plain experimentation to adulthood many teens try a few joints, a bit of crack cocaine, some ecstasy etc to see what happens. Some get addicted, hooked up and some go into adulthood with it. Many teens just try it out and eventually find that it is not taking them anywhere, they stop and go on to college, a job, or a fruitful life.

But a few lawmakers trying to save a few dollars, get together and decide that instead they will put teens into prison with adults for a while to shake them up. What a liability. Are you people serious.

Rhode Island, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Texas and Wisconsin try 17-year-olds as adults, according to the National Center for Juvenile Justice. Connecticut, New York and North Carolina try 16-year-olds in adult courts, although Connecticut has raised the age of juvenile court jurisdiction from 16 to 18 for most offenses starting in 2010.

College-bound teenagers arrested under the new law risk losing federal financial aid if convicted of a drug crime. Those looking for work will have to disclose a criminal record. If the 17-year-olds had been in Family Court, their records would be hidden from public view.

What a great way to write off a few youth in favor of saving a few dollars. How ’bout we save some money by getting rid of high salaries for stupid lawmakers and those in government positions that fail to do their homework?

Without doing much homework, Republican Gov. Don Carcieri’s office came up with an idea to put juveniles in the adult system to save some money. The Gov’s goof up ended up costing the State of Rhode Island over $104,000 dollars instead of $40,000 that would be saved in the juvenille system. Very smart Governor.

Not to mention something called human rights.

Well now you can do genetic testing on the doggie of your choice and find out for a mere $65.00 if you have what you think you had. MetaMorphix of Maryland will take that mouth swab and test it to help you determine the breed of your dog. This is certainly the wave of the future, helping you find out if Fido is likely going to be herding children on the block or sniffing out birds in the back yard. The method can test for 134 of the 157 dog breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club. Woof Woof
